Gatsby daydream
"For a while these reveries provided an outlet for his imagination; they were a satisfactory hint of the unreality of reality, a promise that the rock of the world was founded securely on a fairy’s wing."
Sentence pulled almost by random, nearly random, kind of, to look at today. Somehow unreal reality makes some people think of Buddha, but that's Google for you, as if the internet were real.

Gatsby nighthawks
Ann Althouse's Gatsby sentence selection today is this:
At the enchanted metropolitan twilight I felt a haunting loneliness sometimes, and felt it in others — poor young clerks who loitered in front of windows waiting until it was time for a solitary restaurant dinner — young clerks in the dusk, wasting the most poignant moments of night and life.
That haunting loneliness is seen at museums.
Gatsby, torn mouth
The mouth was wide open and ripped at the corners as though she had choked a little in giving up the tremendous vitality she had stored so long.

Gatsby's wet snaky underwear
The prolonged and tumultuous argument that ended by herding us into that room eludes me, though I have a sharp physical memory that, in the course of it, my underwear kept climbing like a damp snake around my legs and intermittent beads of sweat raced cool across my back.

Gatsby, gray cars
Occasionally a line of gray cars crawls along an invisible track, gives out a ghastly creak, and comes to rest and immediately the ash-gray men swarm up with leaden spades and stir up an impenetrable cloud, which screens their obscure operations from your sight. This sentence analyzed to an inch of its life, here on Althouse.blosgpot.com.

Gatsby mouth
For a moment a phrase tried to take a shape in my mouth and my lips parted like a dumb man's as though there was more struggling upon them than a wisp of startled air.
He talks like that. And Ann talks about him talking like that at the Gatsby project on Althouse.blogspot.com.
He could make a better triangle, square and circle if he tried because I saw that in real life once. A man I met on the beach who kept saying the word "oh" over and over again out of his perfectly square mouth, and I mean perfectly square. That's what was so surprising about that. His lips started out like a straight line then opened to a square, but then the round sound "O" came out of it, like he was blowing round smoke rings out of a square hole. It was the most astounding thing, and I couldn't even mention it, and I'll never forget that.
