Threads may be neater but if I can fit a tab on the piece I'd just as soon use a tab, as you do.
The only time I've absolutely had to use a thread was when the attachments place was a POINT. NO ROOM for a tab!
I like the map background on the seven flower (one of my favorite pop ups).
