Alice in Wonderland pop-up card

Alice in Wonderland characters in the style of Tim Burton on a red and white grid that folds in half on the diagonal and tucks when closed into a pile of slats double the length of any given side.

This card in its present form is all about the grid (when it is not about the characters). The three dimensional grid is attached on two sides as a V shape that stands up. The grid spread out and cast as a fisherman's net when the card is opened, the unattached sides briefly airborne until the grid in full formation is spread completely and precisely over a checkerboard tiled floor. The tiles of course being paper.

The characters can be removed and colored.

penguin pop-up card

Single-page pop-up card for my brother. The card depicts a ridiculously unrealistic scene of a penguin feeding a pie to two chicks in nest in a tree. So wrong all over the place.

Single page birthday card for a friend, based on the first page of Brava Strega Nona! by Tomie DePaola, popped up by Robert Sabuda and Matthew Reinhart.

The birthday loomed and there I was idea-bereft, empty of any ideas building pressure for expression so I pulled a few pop-up books off the shelves and thumbed through them for inspiration.

There was nothing particularly apposite about a tree but then I thought, there doesn't need to be. Just make something cute. So I used crayons which would permit a great deal of childlike carelessness in execution. The background is my least favorite part of any card. This background very closely mimics the art in the book. So does the tree with certain modifications to make it easier. I am very lazy sometimes. Somehow the idea lodged that I would not be doing anything more than once. If I messed up, and I did, then I will just have to make adjustments and live with the mistakes. If I would do this again it would come out much better, but I don't care. I'm not trying to win any awards over here and I am not striving for perfection.

bunny passion pop-up card

This is a 3-page pop-up card to acknowledge a friend's birthday. This year his birthday coincides with Easter, most unfortunate in my view because that means his personal celebration is shared with something that, frankly, is more significant.

Seldom do I ever have a chance to see anybody open one of my cards because I am usually not there when it happens so I have no way to gauge their reaction. But this time was different because I co-hosted a party for the person at my home. The party was rather large. Oddly, people had gathered in one of the bedrooms because that is where the cards were collected. With no small sense of drama, my friend Paul opened his cards and shared them with the room packed with people. Knowing by now that the card from yours truly would be some sort of pop-up, he saved it for last.

The room was blown away. No brag, just fact. I overheard one woman say to Paul, "Surely, you must know how much somebody loves you to do all this." Others simply marveled. At least they pretended to marvel. Lost on Paul, and this was planned, was the second story of the Christian passion happening on a smaller scale and in black and white in the background, purposively overshadowed by the the larger and more colorful and more fully explosive bunny rabbits. Nobody noticed the card actually told two stories at once. Noticing that would come later if at all.

Thank you card for invitation to a cocktail party.

8.5 X 11 card stock with 2 inches trimmed off both sides, so that would be 6.5 X 9 then folded in half resulting in 4.5 X 6.5 inch card . An envelope was fashioned with the same card stock sealed with an identical fish sticker, except much smaller.

Both bear arms are cut directly onto a "V" mechanism glued across the central fold that works as a broad upward scoop. So the arms are in the down position when the card is closed and they lift up as the card is opened. Fir is scribbled on both sides of the arms. The fish is glued at two points, one glue spot on each paw and the fish is placed at a slightly different angle from the arms which forces the paws downward slightly when the card is fully opened and the whole fish slightly up off the bear's arms, tilting toward the viewer more than the arms do. It really does look like the bear is passing off the fish. The viewer is supposed to notice the fish has a bite taken out. It's rather like being handed a piece of pie with a big ol' chunk missing and obvious teeth marks.

A personal message of warmth is written on the bottom right, not shown.

snail town pop-up card

These are three identical cards for birthdays that coincide at the end of the month. It is a single page pop-up that depicts a snail town under a tree. There isn't much going on. Snails apparently lead perfunctory existences. There is no envelope. The priority mailer will have to suffice.

Took the sweet snail card to church today and you would not believe the response. Every adult that I showed it to thought that it was amazing how well all the parts did just what they were supposed to do. The kids however were amazed by the art and the pop-up parts. I bet they opened and closed that card 50 times, I'm surprised that the card held up so well under all the pressure. But then since I'm sure you took all those possibilities into consideration in the making of the said card I should not have been surprised at all.

Thank you for thinking of me and all the wonderful thought you put into your project. I had a great birthday that I spent helping a friend from church move. Jason needed to make something to take for a potluck going away meal for one of his coworkers, so he and I worked together to make scalloped potatoes & ham. Guess it was pretty good cause there wasn't much of the very large batch that we made left.

Anyway thank you again for thinking of me I loved the card.

Apologies. The following three animated GIFS have nothing to do with Palin directly. The thing is, Palin wrote three notes on her palm and referred to them during an interview following her address to a Tea Party convention, four notes actually, one was crossed out. A bit ridiculous on the face of it because, come on, how hard is it be to keep in mind three discussion points. Considered hypocritical by critics because it occurred concurrently with her dissing the president for his customary reliance on a Teleprompter, known satirically as TOUS, or TIC. The following news cycle was replete with ridicule. Every talk show, every comedian made hay while the sun shone. I did these things in my sleep. That's right. I woke up one morning and there they were. So blame my sleeping self, if blame you must.

Jon Stewart's writers nicked a joke from another comedian's Twitter.

And Joy Behar simply cannot help herself from her own obsession. In her own show she interjects Palin whenever, wherever possible no matter who the guest or how irrelevant to the subject at hand. Poor thing, it's a little bit sad actually.
